By C.M. Paul  - 1 Comments
Mumbai, Jul. 14. Sultan Battery - Two days after Don Bosco College at Sultan Bathery in north Kerala was attacked, IUS (Salesian Institutions of Higher Education) Asia Coordinator for Education Dr George Thadathil visited the college to express his solidarity on behalf of the entire Salesian Colleges and University institutions in Asia which number about 60 institutions.

During his day-long visit, on Thursday 13 July, Dr Thadathil who is principal of Salesian College Sonada and Siliguri Campus met with Principal Dr Joy Ullattil, the provincial / founder body president Fr Joyce Thonikuzhiyil and the former Parent Teacher Association president Mr Abraham Thadathil.

Dr Thadathil said, ''the effort of the College management to resist political interference within college administration has been behind the violence and it was reiterated by the entire parent body who had gathered together in solidarity with the management. A student who had insisted on starting a political unit in the college campus was suspended after warning and the procedures as per college rules.''

Meanwhile, Police on Wednesday arrested 13 SFI and DYFI (Communist Party of India) activists for vandalising the Don Bosco college at Sultan Bathery in Wayanad district on Tuesday even as alleged police inaction during the rampage by the activists have drawn widespread flak.

Police have charged the arrested under various sections including IPC 308 (attempt to commit culpable homicide) based on the complaint by college principal Fr. Joy Ullattil. Police have estimated the losses in the attack to the tune of Rs 10 lakh as per preliminary estimates.

The SFI activists and sympathisers, numbering around 200, had went on a rampage and vandalised the college classrooms and offices.

The attack took place after the march taken by SFI in protest against the suspension of a SFI activist, Jishnu Venugopal, who is a second year B.Com student, by the college authorities for engaging in students politics on campus turned violent at around 11.30 am on Tuesday.

College management alleged that the police personnel who were present on the campus remained mute spectators when the mob, armed with sticks, went on a destruction spree damaging computers, smart classrooms, office equipment, furniture, biometric punching machines.

''It was the police who informed us beforehand that the college buildings would be attacked during the protests and asked us to declare a holiday for the college. But they didn't do anything to prevent the pre- planned attack. They just looked on as the attackers went on a rampage,'' college principal Fr. Joy Ullattil said.

He said that the activists did not spare even the statue of Don Bosco inside the college chappel and at the residential campus.

''All the window panes number around 370 in the multi- storied college building were smashed,'' he said.

Sulthan Bathery MLA, IC Balakrishnan said that police remained inactive after succumbing to political pressure.
