The Spain born priest Father Angel was elected Rector Major by the 27th General Chapter of the Congregation on May 24, 2014 becoming the first Spaniard and third non-Italian to hold that post in Salesian history. Prior to his election to the elevated post, he also worked with Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires, who later became Pope Francis. As the newsuperior of the Salesian, he presided at the opening of the world celebrations of the 200th birthday of Saint John Bosco on January 24, 2014 in Turin.

Although he has been to some of the other Salesian Provinces of India, this is the first time he will be visiting the Province of Shillong. During his brief stay, in the two northeastern cities he will meet with and address members of the Salesian family and groups of young people.

In Tripura, besides Agartala, he will also visit St. Xavier's School at Pathaliaghat.
