Archbishop Dominic Jala dies in a car accident

Shillong, Oct. 12. Shillong/Colusa County: The Province of St. John Paul II and the Archdiocese of Shillong regret to announce the tragic death of Most Rev. Archbishop Dominic Jala sdb, dd in a tragic car accident at Colusa County, California on the 10 October 2019, 2:00pm local time (California).
The Archbishop, after the Ad Limina meeting with His Holiness Pope Francis left for the US to meet his old time friend Father Matthew Vellankal who served as pastor to the St. Bonaventure Catholic community in California. The duo accompanied by another India priest Father Joseph Parrackett went to Lakeclear for a break and while on their way back at Colusa County, a mini truck hit them from behind. The Archbishop and Father Matthew died on the spot, while father Joseph sustain to serious injuries. They were taken to the hospital in Colusa County for autopsy. Speaking to Father Michael Makri over Skype and Whatsapp, Father Johnson of Oakland Diocese gave these details 'As per the sheriff's deputy, the accident took place around 2 pm on the 10th (CA time). They were on an intersection of highway 16 and 20, their car and semi truck collided. Father Matthew was driving and Archbishop was sitting next to him in front. Father Joseph was sitting behind. Archbishop and Father Matthew died on the spot while Father Joseph was airlifted to the near by hospital''. On further enquiry, Father Johnson also said that 'the police will release the bodies only after autopsy which will take 4 to 6 days as this is week end and Monday is a holiday here. So we cant make any plans till the bodies are released.
Archbishop Jala was born on 12 July 1951 at Mawlai, he made his first profession as a Salesian on 24 May 1968 and on 24 May 1975 made his Final Profession. He left for his studies of Theology to Kristu Jyoti College, Bangalore in 1975 and on 17 November 1977 was ordained a priest. He did his Practical Training from 1972 to 1974 at Don Bosco Tura, and in 1977 to 1980 he worked at Don Bosco Maligoan. He went to Testaccio Rome in 1980 for his higher studies on Liturgy. From 1985 to 1989 he was a professor at Sacred Heart Theological College. From 1989 to 1990 he was made the Rector of St. Anthony's College and from 1990 to 1993 he was appointed as the Vice Provincial of Guwahati Province and the Rector of the Provincial House. He was a Rector of Don Bosco Technical School Shillong from 1993 to 1996 and on 24 January 1996 he was appointed as the Provincial of Guwahati Province and before his term as the Provincial would end, he was elected as the Archbishop of Shillong Arhdiocese and his Episcopal Ordination was held on the 2 April 2000. May the Lord grant him eternal rest.
