Salesian Sister, topper at Salesian College Sonada
By C.M. Paul
Kolkata, Jan. 9.   Sonada - In the first semester results announced by North Bengal University (NBU), under Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) syllabus, a Salesian Sister student is topper. Other toppers too are all girls overwhelmingly beating the boys in highest grade scores.
Among the toppers are four girls securing SGPA 8 and above on a score of 10.

SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average) is a grading system used by many universities. Mathematically, it is the weighted mean of the grades achieved in various subjects with the credits allotted to the subjects acting as weights.

There are 22 students scoring SGPA 7 ponits and above, of these 18 are girl students.

There were 112 students enrolled and appeared for university exams in 10 departments of the college.

The first topper is from B.Com programme - Salesian Sister Suzan Maria Louis from Auxilium St. Mary's Kurseong securing 80.92% with SGPA 8.55.

Securing second position is Miss Sharon Lepcha of Gorabari for English Honours with 80.62% and SGPA 8.40.

In the third position there are two students from Sonada each scoring SGPA 8.10. They are both from English Honors, namely Aiswarya Mukhia with 78.77% and Ankita Rai with 76.31%.

A total of 16 students have not cleared the semester, of these are 4 girls and 12 boys.

Three students of English Honours department secured both second and third positions among toppers of the college.

This is the first time that NBU conducts exams under Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) programme in which the students have a choice to choose from the prescribed courses, which are referred as core, elective or minor or soft skill courses and they can learn at their own pace and the entire assessment is graded-based on a credit system.

The basic idea is to look into the needs of the students so as to keep up-to-date with development of higher education in India and abroad. CBCS aims to redefine the curriculum keeping pace with the liberalisation and globalisation in education and allows students an easy mode of mobility to various educational institutions spread across the world along with the facility of transfer of credits earned by students.
